Canada Moving Tax Guide 2025: Personal Effects Exemption Rules

Are you planning to immigrate to Canada but don’t know how to transport your belongings? You may bring many personal belongings and household items with you when immigrating to Canada. It is important to understand the immigration exemption amount, application conditions, required documents and restrictions on checked items. In this article, Fuuffy will introduce you to the tax-free strategy for moving immigrants to Canada and the application guide for personal tax exemptions! So that you can smoothly bring your personal belongings and household items to Canada and start a new life.

Canadian Duties and Customs Fees

After you immigrate to Canada, it may take some time to adapt to life in Canada, or you may not be accustomed to the food and environment overseas. You can use Fuuffy to send Hong Kong food and daily necessities to Canada to relieve your homesickness! Generally, the tax rate for sending items from Hong Kong to Canada is 5%, and the tax exemption is 20 CAD. Calculate Australia and Canada duties and customs fees

1. Permanent residents/persons with permanent resident status

2. Have lived in Canada for more than 12 months or intend to live in Canada for more than 12 months

Application documents

1. Goods to Follow List (item list) indicates the value, brand, model and serial number of all goods

2. Goods Accompanied List (accompanied belongings) indicate the value, brand, model and serial number of all goods

3. BSF186 Form (B4 Form)</strong >(Import declaration form for shipping/air freight to destination)

4. Passport/Visa copy

Notes on filling in the BSF186 form

(1) Fill in personal information

The parts that need to be filled in include the sender’s name (Importer’s name), Canadian address (Importer’s address), and country of origin.

(2) List of items

It is recommended to try to group different items into categories to clearly display a complete and clear list. For example, different types of kitchenware can be grouped into ""kitchenwares"".

(3) Immigration categories

Immigrants will immigrate to Canada through different channels, such as investment immigration, study immigration, or return migration. Most first-time immigrants will be classified as ""Settler"". Before filling in this field, you can refer to the descriptions in the four categories in detail and provide the date of arrival in Canada. After you have verified that the information is correct, you can sign in the last column! For details, please see Canadian CBSA website

Handling the duty-free customs declaration procedures upon arrival in Canada

After arriving in Canada, you need to fill in personal information and declare at the customs kiosk. One of the questions is ""I am/we have accompanied goods; (excluding your checked baggage)"". Remember to answer ""Yes"". After answering all the questions , you will need to declare to the customs together with the reply slip and BSF186 form given to you by the Kiosk machine. The customs will have the opportunity to ask you for details about the items that are about to be shipped by ship or air. After customs inspection, the BSF186 form will be stamped and you will be given an Accounting document number, which means that your items have been approved to enter Canada.

Back luggage (package received 3 months after arrival)

After receiving the package, you must go to the Canadian CBSA office to clear customs

Prepare documents: B4 form, list of valuable items (packing list + invoice), original immigration paper, new product invoice or purchase receipt
