UPS Large Package Surcharge
When using UPS international courier services through the Fuuffy cross-border logistics platform, shippers must strictly comply with UPS requirements concerning the physical size and weight limits of standard packages and pallets. Shipments exceeding the permitted specifications may be rejected, returned, or subject to additional charges imposed by UPS. This article explains the key UPS size and weight limits, as well as the Irregular Package Surcharge.
1. Maximum Limits for Individual UPS International Packages
Within the standard international parcel network, an individual package—not shipped under a pallet service—must not exceed any of the following physical limits. Otherwise, the shipment may be subject to an Over Maximum Limits Fee and other related cross-border logistics charges:
- Maximum actual weight per package: Must not exceed 150 lb (approximately 70 kg).
- Maximum length of the longest side: Must not exceed 108 inches (approximately 274 cm).
- Maximum combined length and girth: Must not exceed 157 inches (approximately 400 cm).
2. Large Package Criteria and Charging Mechanism
When a package has a large volume and its combined length and girth exceeds 300 cm but remains within the maximum limit of 400 cm, UPS will classify it as a Large Package. Such shipments are subject to special handling and charging arrangements:

• The minimum billable weight for a Large Package is 40 kg. Even if the package has an actual weight of only 10 kg, the base shipping charge will be calculated using a minimum billable weight of 40 kg.
• A Large Package Surcharge will also apply. However, once a shipment is subject to the Large Package Surcharge, UPS will not apply an Additional Handling charge to the same package.
3. Conditions That Trigger Additional Handling Charges
To protect automated conveyor and sorting systems, UPS may apply an Additional Handling charge when a package meets any of the following non-standard packaging, shape, size, or weight conditions:
- Non-standard packaging: Items that are not fully enclosed in a sturdy corrugated cardboard shipping container. Examples include items packed directly in metal, wood, hard plastic, or canvas wrapping, as well as packages extensively covered with tape or shrink wrap.
- Irregular or non-cuboidal shape: Irregular cylindrical items, drums, barrels, wooden crates, buckets, or exposed tyres that are not enclosed in a shipping container.
- Oversized package dimensions: Packages with a longest side exceeding 122 cm or a second-longest side exceeding 76 cm.
- Excessive actual weight: An individual package with an actual weight exceeding 25 kg.
- Excessive average package weight: In a multi-package shipment, the average weight per package exceeds 25 kg and the weight of each individual package is not clearly specified in the shipping documents.
4. Irregular Package Surcharge
An Irregular Package Surcharge applies to any package shipped between origins and destinations within the Asia-Pacific region that meets the criteria for any of the following charges:
- Additional Handling
- Large Package Surcharge
- Over Maximum Limits Fee
Important: The Irregular Package Surcharge is applied on a per-package basis.
5. Heavy Freight Pallet Service Limits
These limits apply to UPS Worldwide Express Freight®, which is intended for heavy commercial cargo and large industrial equipment shipped on pallets:
- Oversize pallet handling charge: If a pallet exceeds the applicable dimensional limits, UPS will charge HKD 2,723 for each oversized pallet.
- Route-specific limits: The maximum weight and physical size limits for palletised freight may vary depending on the origin, such as Hong Kong, and the requirements of the destination country or region. International courier sorting centres may re-measure packages during processing. If a carton is overfilled and bulges outward, or becomes compressed and deformed during transit, the system may measure the package from its furthest protruding point.
As a result, a package close to the applicable threshold may be classified as a Large Package or an oversized package, leading to unexpected surcharges. We recommend allowing a measurement margin of 1–2 cm when preparing your shipment.
