International Trade & Logistics Terminology

Our glossary simplifies common industry terms in freight and logistics into clear, easy-to-understand explanations.

Automated Manifest System

The Automated Manifest System (AMS) is an electronic filing platform required by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for all carriers. Before cargo enters the United States by air or sea, airlines or shipping companies must submit manifest information in advance, including the bill of lading number, cargo description, and shipper and consignee information. This system aims to conduct risk analysis before cargo arrives, expedite customs clearance, and reduce the risks of smuggling, terrorism, and illegal trade. Failure to submit an AMS within the required timeframe may result in shipment delays or fines, imposing additional costs on both exporters and logistics providers. Familiarity with AMS operations is crucial for cross-border e-commerce businesses, as even small shipments must comply with U.S. import requirements. With the digitization of international trade, AMS not only enhances transparency but also accelerates the efficiency of the entire supply chain, making it an essential component of international logistics.
