International Trade & Logistics Terminology

Our glossary simplifies common industry terms in freight and logistics into clear, easy-to-understand explanations.

Certificate of Origin

A Certificate of Origin (CO) is a document issued by an official or authorized institution in the exporting country, certifying the place of production or manufacturing of goods. The CO serves as a crucial basis for the importing country to determine whether to grant tariff preferences or apply quota restrictions, and is particularly crucial in free trade agreements (FTAs). Certificates of Origin include the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), regional agreement certificates of origin, and general COs. For exporters, properly applying for a CO not only allows them to enjoy tariff reductions but also avoids customs clearance delays and fines. As global supply chains become increasingly complex, COs are no longer just a tool for tariff reductions; they also serve as crucial evidence for maintaining corporate brand integrity and compliance.
