Our glossary simplifies common industry terms in freight and logistics into clear, easy-to-understand explanations.
Free Alongside Ship (FAS) is an international trade term where the seller is responsible for transporting the goods to the port of shipment and placing them alongside a designated vessel, at which point the risk passes to the buyer. The buyer is responsible for loading, freight, and insurance. FAS applies to bulk cargoes shipped by sea, such as grain or coal. The seller is responsible for export customs clearance, while the buyer is responsible for onward transportation arrangements. This clear division of responsibilities can reduce disputes.
