A Consular Invoice is a special invoice that some importing countries require exporters to obtain a visa from their embassy or consulate. This document contains similar information to a commercial invoice, but with an additional layer of official certification to prevent underquotes or false declarations and ensure that the importing country can correctly collect customs duties. Although a Consular Invoice increases the paperwork and costs for exporters, it is a barrier to entry in some markets. When signing a contract, companies should confirm whether the importing country has this requirement so that they can obtain it in advance to avoid customs clearance delays.
